Last game of the first half of the season: Bornheim travel to Göppingen
Matchday 17: 1. Göppinger SV
FSV Frankfurt’s winning streak came to an end with a 2-2 draw at home to FC-Astoria Walldorf after eight consecutive victories. Nevertheless, the Bornheim side are still top of the table in the Regionalliga Südwest and will now face promoted Oberliga side Göppinger SV this Saturday in their final game of the first half of the season. With a win or even a draw, the Black & Blues can become autumn champions.
For the first time in the club’s history, 1. Göppinger Sportverein has been in the Regionalliga Südwest since this season. At the beginning of the 1970s, GSV played in the then Regionalliga Süd and was relegated to the first amateur league in 1971. After decades of ups and downs in the regional and district leagues, the Swabians played in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg from 2016 until their promotion this year. The Swabians are coached by head coach Gianni Coveli, who has been in charge since 2014.
Göppingen started the new season with a 2:2 draw at SGV Freiberg. After a long dry spell, the first three points only came on matchday 9 at Eintracht Frankfurt II. Over the course of the first half of the season, GSV built up a run of five unbeaten games in a row, which came to an end last Saturday with a 4-1 defeat at Offenbacher Kickers. Next Saturday will be the first encounter between 1. Göppinger SV and FSV Frankfurt.
