Info on SC Freiburg II
Matchday 3: SC Freiburg II
After the bitter 5-0 defeat at Offenbacher Kickers on August 3 and the recent 5-2 defeat in the anniversary game against Frankfurt Eintracht, FSV Frankfurt will travel to Breisgau next Sunday to face the second team of SC Freiburg.
SC Freiburg II were relegated to the Regionalliga Südwest last season and are now back in the fourth tier after three years. The season before last, Freiburg finished runners-up in the third division, but in the following season, the Breisgau club battled against relegation and finished bottom of the table with just 30 points.
Benedetto Muzzicato has been the coach of Freiburg U23 since July 1, 2024 and picked up four points from a possible six in the first two regional league games. On the first matchday, Freiburg held onto the lead for a very long time against Offenbacher Kickers at home in the Dreisamstadion until the hosts conceded the equalizer shortly before the final whistle to make it 2-2 and take just one point instead of three. On the second matchday, SC traveled to KSV Hessen Kassel, decided the game in the final minutes and won 3:1 away from home. Muzzicato’s team currently occupies fourth place in the table with four points and can theoretically take over the lead in the table after the third matchday with a win on Sunday.
A total of 20 players left the club during the summer break, with 14 moving to Breisgau, including 35-year-old Mathias Fetsch from Unterhaching. The 33-year-old Marc Hornschuh, who played for Bornheim in the second division in 2015, also moved from FC Zurich to the neighboring country. Freiburg “Zwo” played five test matches during pre-season preparations. The U23s lost 0:1, 2:3 and 1:4 against FC Wil 1900, TSG Hoffenheim II and Stuttgarter Kickers, while Freiburg’s youngsters won 1:0 and 6:2 against VfL Bochum’s U21s and SC Lahr. The Breisgau side drew 3:3 with FC Basel II.
In the past, the Black & Blues have not been able to win against SC Freiburg II. Head coach Tim Görner’s team will therefore give their all next Sunday to secure three points and their first win of the regional league season.
