First half of the season ends in defeat: FSV misses out on the fall autumn championship
FSV Frankfurt's winning streak came to an end with a 2-2 draw at home to FC-Astoria Walldorf after eight consecutive victories. Nevertheless, the Bornheim side were still top of the table in the Regionalliga Südwest and now travelled to Oberliga promoted Göppinger SV this Saturday to round off the first half of the season. With a win or even a draw, the Black & Blues could finish the first half of the season in first place in the table and thus be crowned autumn champions.
Compared to the previous match against FC-Astoria Walldorf, FSV head coach Tim Görner changed the starting line-up in just one position. Timo Hildmann was absent due to injury and was therefore not in today's squad. Less than five minutes into the game, Bornheim were already dangerously close to the Göppingen goal. After a pass to Lucas Hermes, the striker marched alone towards GSV keeper Matthias Layer and ultimately shot over the home side's goal. The Göppingen team gradually built up momentum over the course of the opening quarter of an hour and in the 17th minute, the Black & Blue's defenders prevented a dangerous shot on goal from the Swabians at the last moment. Ten minutes later, Hermes tried again with a shot at the Göppingen goal, but Layer fended the ball off with one hand, preventing the free-standing Gwangin Lee from finishing in the penalty area and giving the home side possession again. The newly promoted side did not make it particularly easy for FSV, as head coach Gianni Coveli's team were more courageous and continued to influence the course of the game. Shortly before the end of the first half, FSV countered on the Göppingen goal again. After a cross from the right, Tim Latteier shot across the box in the five-yard box and missed another chance to give Frankfurt the lead. Referee Kresser did not allow a single second of stoppage time and blew the whistle on time. Both teams went in at half-time goalless.
A good five minutes after the restart, goalkeeper Cas Peters received the ball after a misplaced pass from Göppingen and went to ground in an attempt to play around the goalkeeper. The referee did not hesitate for long and pointed to the penalty spot. After a few minutes of treatment, Tim Latteier stepped up to take the penalty and shot past the left goalpost, meaning the 1,050 spectators in the Göppingen stadium still had to wait for the first goal in this duel. However, the spectators did not have to wait too long, as GSV launched another counter-attack shortly afterwards and Mohamed Baroudi converted from close range in the 57th minute to make it 0:1 from FSV's perspective.Having taken the lead, Göppingen played much more actively and appeared much more confident.Although the Frankfurt side tried to equalize, the Bornheim team struggled for a long time to find a gap in the home defence and create a threat on the goalkeeper. In the 73rd minute, there was a glimmer of hope for an equalizer after Lee found himself free in front of goalkeeper Layer in the five-yard box, but ended up shooting the ball past the right-hand post. The duels became more heated in the final phase, which is why the referee showed four yellow cards to the Göppingen side. FSV took another free-kick in the final minute of stoppage time and Giorgio Del Vecchio brought the ball into the home penalty area. Substitute Filip Pandza got to the ball but headed it just wide of the goal. This was to be the last action of the match and the defeat at the end of the first half was now sealed after the final whistle.
FSV Frankfurt lost 0:1 to 1.Göppinger SV and missed out on the fall championship due to Hoffenheim's late away win. The Black & Blues thus lose a league game for the first time since the beginning of August and end their long run of 14 unbeaten league games in a row with today's defeat.
