Small city duel ends unhappily for FSV
On matchday 32 of the Regionalliga Südwest, FSV Frankfurt hosted Eintracht Frankfurt U21 in a small city duel this Sunday afternoon. In the penultimate home game of the current season, head coach Tim Görner's team wanted to take a big step towards staying in the league with a win on the Bornheimer Hang. Thanks to the 3:1 away win at VfR Aalen last Sunday, Bornheim are now unbeaten in three games in a row and want to extend their run for the remaining upcoming games.
The Black & Blues started attacking immediately after kick-off and put head coach Kristjan Glibo's team under pressure early on. In the third minute of the game, Onur Ünlücifci, who has scored all of his goals from distance this season, tried to shoot at Eintracht goalkeeper Kaua Santos from around 20 metres out, but the shot was not strong enough and Santos was able to save the ball. The Bundesliga club's U21s countered a little later on the goal of Henry Bremer, who replaced the injured Justin Ospelt. Bremer and FSV defender Noah Awassi created the first danger with their joint pass. Over the course of the opening minutes, Glibo's eleven made their way into Bornheim's penalty area, whose defence was alert early on. In the eighth minute, Sidney Raebiger broke through in the home side's penalty area, but shot wide of Bremer's box. A few minutes later, Jihad Boutakhrit tried to get through two SGE players and into the penalty area, but the Black & Blues could only manage a throw-in in the end. In the 20th minute, it was Boutakhrit again who took the ball with his strong foot and tried to score the first goal of the match. However, an opponent blocked Boutakhrit and prevented Bornheim from taking the lead.
During the first half, the duels in this small town duel increased and referee Christoph Rübe whistled several free kicks in favour of FSV, which, however, did not result in a goal. In the 26th minute, after a successful tackle, Oluwabori Falaye broke through in the opponent's penalty area and shot at Santos' goal, but another opponent got in the line of fire to prevent anything worse. Bornheim were increasingly aggressive on the offensive, while the young Eagles were called upon to play more defensively. After another free-kick for the home side, which was taken by Ünlücifci, the visitors cleared it quickly and tried to get the ball into Bremer's goal from their own half. However, Eintracht's long-range shot was not strong enough for Bremer to see any danger and safely accept the ball. Not much happened in the final quarter of an hour of the first half in the sunny PSD Bank Arena, with the result that both teams went into the dressing rooms goalless after one minute of stoppage time.
In the second half, the first corner of the match was taken by the hosts in the 50th minute, but the ball hit the outside of the net and a goal kick was awarded. In the second half, the build-up play of both teams gradually became more fluid and the tackles became more intense. Ünlücifci took a shot from inside the Eintracht penalty area in the 59th minute, but Santos was down quickly to keep the ball out. A good five minutes later, Awassi headed from close range after a cross from the left to Tim Weißmann, who was unable to reach the ball, resulting in another goal-kick for the Black & Whites. Bornheim did win a few free-kicks in this game, but Görner's team failed to capitalise on these opportunities and were too imprecise with some of their crosses and finishes. Many free-kicks ended with a goal kick or possession for the visiting team. Both teams continued to struggle to score the first goal of the game in the final phase, which was also interrupted by a number of fouls from the referee. In the 79th minute, Ünlücifci played the ball to substitute Malik Memisevic, who stumbled in a duel in the SGE II penalty area and went down, but the resulting corner kick still did not bring FSV Frankfurt the first goal in this duel. In the 83rd minute, the Black & Blues were unable to get the ball out of their own penalty area and shortly afterwards Eintracht's second team had a chance from a corner kick, which they also failed to capitalise on. Referee Rübe signalled four minutes of added time after 90 minutes had been played. Eintracht made one last effort and went on the counter-attack. Daniel Starodid broke through the Bornheim players and tried to score the late goal, but he was prevented from doing so and the ball ended up with Sidney Raebiger, who was free in the opposing team's penalty area, scoring the 0:1 from FSV's point of view in the first minute of stoppage time. The home side threw everything forward again, but the U21s bridged the remaining minutes of the match and did not allow anything at the back. After four minutes of stoppage time, the small city duel ended with a rather bitter defeat for FSV, who failed to score a goal despite a large number of opportunities.
FSV Frankfurt lost their penultimate home game against Frankfurt Eintracht U21 in an unfortunate 1:0 result, leaving the Bornheim side in twelfth place in the table and still not certain of relegation. Next Saturday, 11.5.24, the Black & Blues will face TSG Hoffenheim U23 for the last away game of the current season. Kick-off is at 2pm at the Dietmar Hopp Stadium.
