After the 3:0 away win at SC Freiburg U23, FSV Frankfurt's next home game was against SGV Freiberg this Saturday. Before kick-off, the Bornheim side were in eleventh place in the table with four points and could finish in the top half of the table with a win today. After the Freiberg team arrived at the Bornheimer Hang later than planned due to a traffic jam, kick-off was delayed by around 35 minutes.
In comparison to the Freiburg game, Tim Weißmann was the captain and Lucas Hermes was in today's starting eleven. Last Sunday's goalscorer Hassan Mourad was absent due to injury and was therefore not in the squad, while Elias Breir was on the bench for today's match. The visitors from Swabia started offensively and pressed in the opening minutes, with FSV goalkeeper Henry Bremer intervening quickly after just two minutes and preventing a Freiberg team pass in the penalty area that could have given them the lead. A few minutes later, Lucas Hermes shot at SGV goalkeeper Michael Gelt's goal, but the ball landed out of bounds, resulting in a goal kick for the visitors. Bornheim tried to switch gears and create chances down the flanks to take the lead, but head coach Roland Seitz's defense stood fairly compact and prevented them from going behind. As the first half progressed, FSV got into the game better and, like Freiberg, won several corners but failed to score. The Black & Blue's build-up play improved after the short drink break in the 25th minute and became more attractive, with the duels on the pitch becoming more heated as time went on. The green-clad Frankfurters were not precise enough with their shots on goal and often ended up out of bounds. The Freiberg players, who wore all blue today, also failed to take advantage of their scoring opportunities in the first half, partly because Bremer cleared a number of shots. Both teams went into the break with a goalless draw.
Both teams went into the second half without a change of personnel and pressed towards their opponents' goal immediately after the restart, with the Blue & Whites making the most of their first major scoring chance in the second half and Gal Grobelnik scoring the opening goal in the 58th minute. In the final 30 minutes, the South Hessians shifted and looked for the right gap in their opponents' penalty area. In the 69th minute, substitute Birkan Celik shot at the visitors' goal from the left side of the penalty area, but the ball landed directly at goalkeeper Gelt. A short time later, the second drink break in this duel followed, and a good five minutes later Gwangin Lee, who replaced Giorgio Del Vecchio in the 58th minute, lifted the ball into the penalty area to Cas Peters, who equalized from very close range. SGV Freiberg looked restless in the final quarter of an hour and defended a lot, while FSV were much more courageous and motivated by the equalizer. In the 83rd minute, Nicolas Loebus played the ball to Malik Memisevic in the penalty area instead of shooting at the opposing goal himself. However, the ball ended up in the feet of the visitors as Memisevic was one step too far away. Three minutes later, Peters headed towards goalkeeper Gelt's box from close range, but the goalkeeper was in the right place and prevented Bornheim from taking the lead for the time being. Lee, who had previously set up the equalizer, scored unchallenged from around 20 metres out to make it 2:1 and turn the game around in stoppage time in front of over 1,000 spectators at the PSD Bank Arena. A few minutes later, the final whistle blew and Görner's team defeated SGV Freiberg to snatch the next three points.
FSV Frankfurt won 2:1 against SGV Freiberg this Saturday afternoon and are now fifth in the Regionalliga Südwest table. The Black & Blues continue their campaign next Friday, August 23, when they travel to the Kraichgau region to face TSG Hoffenheim's second team. Kick-off is at 7pm at the Dietmar Hopp Stadium.
