Despite trailing 2-0 and chasing to catch up: FSV squanders lead in the last minute
FSV Frankfurt took on SV Eintracht-Trier on Saturday afternoon in the 25th matchday of the Regionalliga Südwest. After the 5:1 win at home against Barockstadt Fulda-Lehnerz and their semi-final appearance in the regional cup, the Bornheim side faced an intense clash at the Mosel Stadium in Trier. With a win, the Black & Blues could once again take the lead in the table, provided TSG Hoffenheim II and Kickers Offenbach do not pick up any points in their respective parallel matches.
Head coach Tim Görner had to make do without Tim Weißmann in today's starting line-up, who was unavailable due to illness. The home side pressed from the outset and put the white-clad visitors under pressure early on. FSV initially played the ball back in their own half several times in an attempt to build up play. Both sides also tried to create their first chances with long balls, but the 4,113 spectators in the Mosel Stadium did not see any dangerous actions in the first 25 minutes. In the 26th minute, Tobias Peitz played the ball flat into the Trier penalty area to Cas Peters, who only had to tap the ball in, but shot over SVE goalkeeper Radomir Novakovic's goal from a few meters out. The hosts then countered with Kevin Heinz, who crossed from the left into the Bornheim penalty area to Mateo Biondic, whose header gave the Hessians the lead at 0:1. The Black & Blues initially tried to keep calm and build the game up with long balls, but Eintracht continued to press and extended their lead to 2-0 in the 35th minute with another header, this time from SVE captain Robin Garnier. A short time later, FSV keeper Justin Ospelt almost scored again, but threw himself down after the shot and caught the ball safely. The team from Bornheimer Hang tried to score the equalizer shortly before half-time. In the 42nd minute, Birkan Celik shot at Novakovic's goal just a few meters from the penalty area line, but the ball missed the right-hand post. A short time later, Sho Sannomiya scored the equalizer to make it 1-2 after a pass from Peters. Both teams went into the break with this result after two minutes of stoppage time.
FSV Frankfurt almost scored the equalizer barely five minutes after the restart, but captain Lukas Gottwalt did not get the ball right after a corner kick and the round object rolled into the goal. The Trier team continued to attack and tried to become dangerous again in Bornheim's penalty area, for example by switching sides. The visitors became more confident in the course of the second half and stepped up a gear. Celik took aim at the opposing goal with a direct shot from around 25 meters, but the Eintracht goalkeeper cleared at the last moment for a corner kick, which did not result in an equalizer. In the 65th minute of the match, Bornheim were in for another shock when Hokon Sossah, who had come on as a substitute, won the ball, marched alone towards Ospelt and scored what was supposed to be the 1:3 goal. The home side's joy was short-lived as referee Nico Dönges saw a handball by Trier before the ball was won. A short time later, Sossah scored again, but Ospelt stretched to prevent another goal. FSV breathed a sigh of relief, shook themselves up, acted much more courageously from then on and launched several counter-attacks. The Black & Blues also stepped up their tackling. In the final quarter of an hour, Bornheim attacked again from the right and substitute George Iorga headed in a long pass into the Eintracht penalty area to equalize at 2:2. The visitors were now on level terms with the home side and marched towards the Trier penalty area again in the 89th minute with Hassan Mourad and Cas Peters. The latter received the ball from substitute Mourad and scored to give Görner's side the lead. FSV turned the game around, but the referee added four more minutes and SV attacked again. Sossah latched onto a pass in the final minute of stoppage time and hammered home the equalizer to make it 3:3. Shortly afterwards, the referee blew the whistle to end the hard-fought duel.
In an intense and exciting match, Eintracht Trier and FSV Frankfurt drew 3-3 in the end. Bornheim started passively and did not look good in the first half. Despite the strong comeback, the lead only lasted for a short time and the Black & Blues had to settle for a point. The next top match will take place on Sunday, March 30. FSV will host Stuttgarter Kickers at home in the PSD Bank Arena. Kick-off is at 2 pm.
