FSV review of the year 2024 - the months of October, November and December
A successful year for FSV Frankfurt is drawing to a close and it is time to take stock.
Off the pitch, FSV Frankfurt mourned the loss of Dieter Burdenski, who was very close to the club, in October. Among others, his son Fabian played for several seasons on the Bornheimer Hang. The ninth of October left FSV in mourning, we wish the family continued strength.
On the pitch, Bornheim achieved something that the trend of recent weeks and months might have suggested, but nobody expected. The Black & Blues played five must-win games in October and won them all. The Görner team thus not only extended their unbeaten streak, but also made the golden October perfect with a cup thriller on October 29. October got off to a promising start with two Hesse derbies against Hessen Kassel and Eintracht Frankfurt II. The narrow victory at FC 08 Homburg once again impressively demonstrated that FSV is one of the teams to beat this season if they want to make it into the third division. Villingen were shot down almost single-handedly by the Tulpenbringer. Cas Peters finished off the promoted team for the first, second and third time. The Bornheim team thus proved that they could not only win close games by counter-attacking, but also dominated the role of favorites with plenty of possession. On October 29, the Frankfurt side traveled to Alzenau in the Hessenliga and knew that this cup tie against FC Bayern would be a tough one, as the club from Lower Franconia were top of the Hessenliga at the time. FSV took the lead through Dutchman Peters, but both teams went into half-time with the score at 1-1 after a deflection. In the course of the second half, Bornheim were 3-1 down after a corner kick and a deflected Sunday shot and had to show composure. Gwang-In Lee and Lukas Gottwalt scored in the closing stages to level the scores and make it 3:3 in stoppage time. Tim Latteier put FSV ahead after a cross and everything looked set for a place in the quarter-finals. Just under a minute later, however, Bornheim conceded the equalizer to make it 4:4, which is why the duel went straight to a penalty shoot-out after the final whistle. A game characterized by changing conditions was decided by a strong mentality and a calm Justin Ospelt. FSV Frankfurt is through to the quarter-finals of the Krombacher Hessen Cup and will face group league side SC Willingen on March 19, 2025.
In November, the winning streak against FC-Astoria Walldorf finally came to an end after a hard-fought 2:2 draw, but FSV remained unbeaten. The statutes committee also began its work in November and is currently reviewing the 2017 statutes. The initial results are to be shared with the members at an information event in spring 2025.
The last matchday of the first half of the season on November 16 also brought the first competitive match defeat since August 3 against Göppinger SV. In a tough duel that could have taken a different course had Latteier missed a penalty in the 54th minute. Two days later, FSV Frankfurt e.V. welcomed its members to the annual general meeting. The agenda included a review by the Executive Committee, the financial situation and the outlook for FSV, presented by managing directors Patrick Spengler and Robert Lempka. Those responsible explained the investments and future visions were explained in a structured manner. President Michael Görner and his two Vice Presidents were discharged and re-elected by a large majority.
The end of the first half of the season was followed by two more defeats. At TSV Steinbach Haiger, FSV lost 2:1 against a strong team, despite taking a lightning lead after around 30 seconds through Lucas Hermes, and in the derby against OFC, the Black & Blues also came away with no points after a hard-fought 1:0 defeat. However, the Bornheimers were not granted a playful end to the year, as the match against SC Freiburg II was canceled due to the pitch conditions. As a result, Görner’s team are currently in third place in the table behind TSG Hoffenheim II and Offenbacher Kickers, but could move up to second place again with a win against the second team from Freiburg on February 16, 2025, helped by Offenbach’s home defeat against SGV Freiberg.
And so the year 2024 drew to a close. FSV impressed with its development and can once again attack the top in 2025. The relegation worries recede into the background and give way to a hopeful spirit of optimism.
We wish everyone a happy new year and look forward to welcoming you back to the PSD Bank Arena in large numbers!
