Season opener against TSV Steinbach Haiger
Matchday 1: TSV Steinbach Haiger
The ball has been out of play in the Regionalliga Südwest for exactly 69 days. Tonight, the league kicks off the 24/25 season with the opening match between SV Eintracht Trier and FC 08 Homburg. FSV Frankfurt will then start the season tomorrow (Saturday), which will be a special one for the Bornheim club as they celebrate their 125th anniversary this season. The first opponent in the PSD Bank Arena at home is TSV Steinbach Haiger.
TSV Steinbach Haiger have been playing in Germany’s fourth-highest soccer league since 2015. Apart from the first season, the team from Central Hesse always finished in a single-digit place in the table and gradually established itself as the favorite for promotion. TSV have also made it to the first main round of the DFB Cup by winning the Hessen Cup twice so far (2018 and 2020), but have never been able to reach the second round.
Last season, TSV Steinbach Haiger surprisingly struggled against relegation and thus to stay in the league, although they were always considered the favorites for promotion and were normally found in the top half of the table. After finishing the first half of the season in eighth place, Mittelhessen slumped in the second half of the season and slipped deeper and deeper into the basement. Mittelhessen managed to avoid relegation and on matchday 34, TSV were still in twelfth place. The team from Steinbach won 3-0 against FSV in Frankfurt in the first half of the season, while Bornheim won the return match in Steinbach 2-0.
Following the dismissal of head coach Pascal Bieler in March of this year, Steinbach’s former assistant coach, Hüsni Tahiri, took over as head coach on an interim basis. The team’s relegation will also have contributed to Tahiri’s appointment as head coach of Mittelhessen from this season. He has used the summer break to reorganize his team: With eleven players, almost half the squad has left the club, while the Steinbachers have signed nine players so far. The Central Hessians have won all of their pre-season test matches, with Hüsni Tahiri’s team only drawing 3-3 against the U21s of 1.FC Köln.
