Victory in floodlit match: FSV defends table lead!
Ten league games in a row unbeaten, including five games won in a row. That is FSV Frankfurt's current run in this Regionalliga Südwest season. Before the 13th matchday, the Black & Blues were in first place in the table with eight wins, three draws and just one defeat. This Friday evening, Bornheim traveled to FC 08 Homburg in the Saarland. Homburg were looking to make amends after their 5-1 defeat at Kickers Offenbach, while FSV were looking to continue their run. Head coach Tim Görner's team could defend their lead at the top of the table with an away win today.
True to the motto “never change a winning team”, Görner fielded the same starting eleven as in the previous 3:1 home win against Eintracht Frankfurt II. In the pouring rain, both teams started the floodlit match on the offensive. After a good five minutes of play, Frankfurt countered with Lucas Hermes and Gwangin Lee, who played a beautiful pass towards Homburg's goal and only just missed it. A minute later, the Black & Blues were again in the home penalty area and shot past the right-hand post. At the other end, Homburg were also more committed and Leon Petö scored the opening goal in the 15th minute after Amar Suljic had won the ball to make it 1-0. The home side dominated the contest at Homburg's Waldstadion as the first half progressed, with Hesse switching to defensive mode. After just over half an hour, Görner's side showed signs of life and attacked down the right-hand side. The cross found Lee in the home penalty area, who scored from close range to equalize at 1:1. FSV came into the game better after the goal and acted more courageously, the duel was now at eye level. Shortly before the half-time whistle, Saarland were awarded a free-kick, but the ball went straight out of the goal without finding a taker. With the score at 1:1, referee Tobias Huthmacher whistled for half-time.
Less than five minutes after the restart, Bornheim attacked towards the FCH goal again. In the Homburg penalty area, FSV striker Cas Peters headed the ball towards his fellow attacker Lucas Hermes, but the latter had problems receiving it and the ball ended up in the hands of Giorgio Del Vecchio, who converted into the far corner. With so many players in the box, Homburg goalkeeper Tobias Kretzschmar could only watch as the ball rolled into the goal. The hosts, clad in green, tried their best to equalize, but the opposing defence remained focused and, together with FSV keeper Justin Ospelt, prevented them from conceding another goal. The duels and the situation on the pitch heated up during the final phase. In the 76th minute, Hermes grabbed the ball in the home half and marched towards goal. The FSV striker produced a corner kick with a low finish. After a short corner kick, Ben-Luca Fisher brought the ball into the penalty area, where Peters jumped the highest of all and extended the lead to 3:1 with his head. However, the two-goal lead only lasted a few minutes, as substitute Jermain Nischalke reduced the deficit to 2:3 in the 79th minute. The final minutes became even more heated, the match was interrupted due to fouls on both sides and players from both teams had to be treated. Homburg threw everything forward once again to keep at least one point in the Saarland, but after more than five minutes of stoppage time, the referee blew the final whistle. The three points went to the Bornheimer Hang for the sixth time in a row.
FSV Frankfurt won 3:2 at FC 08 Homburg this Friday evening and thus defended their lead at the top of the table on matchday 13 in the Regionalliga Südwest. The Black & Blues are now unbeaten in eleven consecutive games and have won for the sixth time in a row. On Saturday, October 26, Bornheim will play at home against relegation-threatened FC 08 Villingen. Kick-off is at 2 p.m. in the PSD Bank Arena.
