A perfect golden October: FSV wins cup tie in Alzenau and advances to the quarter-finals
After the 3:0 home win against FC 08 Villingen, FSV Frankfurt kicked off the new regional cup season this Tuesday evening. At 7pm, the leaders of the Regionalliga Südwest took on Hessenliga leaders FC Bayern Alzenau on the artificial pitch next to the Mairec Arena. With a win, the Bornheim team could not only advance to the quarter-finals, but also make the golden October perfect with their current winning streak.
Compared to the previous Villingen game, Birkan Celik, Jan-Erik Eichhorn and Ben-Luca Fisher were in the starting line-up. FSV got off to an attacking start and took the lead in the sixth minute of the game through Cas Peters, the current top scorer in the Regionalliga Südwest. The striker received the ball in the penalty area after a pass from Timo Hildmann, turned 180 degrees and scored with a low shot. Bayern Alzenau were not deterred by the early deficit and started to press. As the first half progressed, head coach Angelo Barletta's home side built up more and more possession and the encounter became more even. The visitors' defence reacted quickly to the home side's crosses and quickly cleared the ball out of their own penalty area. In the 25th minute, the visitors marched towards Justin Ospelt's goal after a misplaced pass from Fisher. A cross from the right side of the pitch was deflected by an FSV player and the ball landed directly into the arms of Ospelt. At the other end, the Black & Blues endeavoured to extend their lead, but struggled to do so. The balls played by Frankfurt often failed to find a precise recipient in the hosts' penalty area who would have been able to finish. Both teams also tried to use long balls to try and break down the opposition defence. Five minutes before the half-time whistle, Bornheim's Timo Hildmann suffered an injury and was unable to continue, with Elias Breir replacing him. In the 44th minute, Alzenau's Paul Seikel scored the equaliser from a free-kick to make it 1:1 and both teams went into half-time with this result.
The players from the Hessenliga team came back from the break more motivated and took a 2:1 lead in the 48th minute through Lennox Kern. The Frankfurt team looked for an opportunity to score the equaliser as quickly as possible. In the 55th minute, Görner's team countered towards the opposing goal, Lucas Hermes crossed from the left side of the pitch to Celik, who was unable to head in time as a home defender reacted quicker and promptly cleared the situation. Shortly after a triple substitution on the FSV bench, the Barletta team increased the lead to 1:3 thanks to a strong finish from Justin Barry. In the last half hour, the spectators on the Alzenau artificial pitch saw heated duels and several interruptions due to fouls. The Black & Blues searched for ideas to avoid the déjà vu of their previous cup defeat at 1.FC Erlensee. In the 65th minute, substitute Gwangin Lee finally scored the equaliser to make it 2:3 after converting a corner kick into the left corner from close range. Frankfurt played with more courage and determination in the closing stages and FSV missed several chances before Lukas Gottwalt finally equalised in the 87th minute after the defender lobbed the ball into the net from another corner kick. But that was not all, as Tim Latteier scored in the second minute of stoppage time to make it 4:3, which many had already written off as the winning goal. However, FC Bayern showed their willpower and scored the 4:4 equaliser just 60 seconds later through Lukas Fecher, a goal that nobody expected. After six minutes of stoppage time, the match finally went to penalties.
Alzenau started the penalty shoot-out first with Marcel Wilke, who netted easily despite Ospelt choosing the right side of the goal. Leonhard von Schroetter then equalised for FSV. The home side missed their next two shots through Luka Garic, who only hit the crossbar, and Lukas Fecher, whose shot was saved by Ospelt. Eichhorn and Gottwalt scored their respective goals. The second goal by Younes Djebbari did little more for the hosts, as Hermes finally sealed the deal shortly afterwards. The Black & Blues converted four out of four penalty kicks, while Alzenau only scored twice in total. The result was a hard-fought and dramatic cup tie with a happy ending for Bornheim, who have now won all of their competitive matches in October.
FSV Frankfurt won a dramatic cup match against FC Bayern Alzenau 8:6 on penalties to advance to the next round. The team from Bornheimer Hang will play the winner of the match between SC Willingen and FC Cleeberg in the upcoming quarter-final of the Krombacher-Hessenpokal, which will take place the Saturday after next. The Görner team's next away match in the Regionalliga Südwest is against FC Gießen next Saturday, 2 November. Kick-off is at 2 p.m. at the Waldstadion in Giessen.
