Despite being outnumbered: FSV fight for a point
FSV Frankfurt started their first regional league game of 2025 with a 1:0 working victory. The three points gained in the catch-up game lifted the Bornheim side into second place in the table. This Saturday, head coach Tim Görner's team traveled to the Ludwigsburg district to face SGV Freiberg. Depending on the outcome of the parallel match between Hoffenheim II and Kickers Offenbach, the Black & Blues could still sniff at first place in the table with a win.
FSV head coach Tim Görner changed the starting line-up by one position compared to the previous Freiburg game. Lukas Gottwalt was on the pitch from the start this time, while Timo Hildmann started on the bench. The white-clad Frankfurters went on the offensive from the very first second and attacked up front. However, the Freiberg defense was alert from the outset and initially prevented any dangerous finishes. The home side built up play at the same time and came within a whisker of scoring the opening goal after just under five minutes. As time went on, the Swabians became more courageous and FSV quickly fell into a defensive role. Despite the many defensive assignments, Bornheim built up play several times and launched several counter-attacks. However, the away team usually lost the ball in midfield or in front of the opposition's penalty area, allowing the Swabians to get moving. The first good chance for the Black & Blues came from Tobias Peitz, who shot at SGV keeper Michael Gelt's goal from around 20 meters out. The goalkeeper stretched and cleared for a corner at the last moment. Lucas Hermes had a sniff at the lead from close range, but missed well over the goal in the Freiberg penalty area. At the other end, SGV striker Halil El-Helwe made his way into the FSV penalty area before lobbing the ball over Justin Ospelt's goal. After two minutes of stoppage time, both teams went into the dressing rooms goalless.
The second half began intensely and frantically at the Wasenstadion in Freiberg. After a foul by Nico Moos, he was first shown a yellow card, followed a few minutes later by a yellow card for another foul. This was followed by a free-kick, which substitute Birkan Celik converted directly in front of the penalty area to give FSV a 1-0 lead. FSV went on the offensive more strongly after taking the lead, partly because Bornheim were outnumbered, but it took less than ten minutes for the team from the Ludwigsburg district to equalize at 1:1. El-Helwe leapt highest after a corner kick and headed the game back to level terms. In the course of the second half, Freiberg dominated despite being outnumbered and put the opposing defenders under pressure. The runners-up lost the ball several times when building up play and tried to regain the lead with long balls. However, the Hessians' finishes were too imprecise and weak, meaning that the home keeper had no problems intercepting them. In the final phase, FSV opted to play for time and tried to get the ball in and score the winning goal. Nicolas Loebus, who had come on as a substitute, tried his luck in the home penalty area with a shot on the turn, a shot from distance from the second row and a header from a corner kick. In the final situation, the midfielder headed the ball against the Freiberg crossbar and just missed the winning goal. After four minutes of stoppage time, the hard-fought encounter in front of hundreds of spectators ended in a draw.
FSV Frankfurt drew 1-1 with SGV Freiberg, despite being outnumbered, but remain in second place in the table. Hoffenheim's point against Kickers Offenbach means Bornheim can close the gap on the leaders with a win against the current leaders. Kick-off against the Kraichgauers' second team is at 2 p.m. on the first day of March in the PSD Bank Arena at home.
